On June 30, 1665, the first companies of the Carignan-Salières Regiment arrived in New France, bringing a contingent of approximately 1,200 soldiers. Sent by King Louis XIV, their mission was to strengthen the colony’s defenses and subdue the Iroquois, whose raids had long threatened French settlements along the St. Lawrence River.

The regiment quickly set out to conquer Iroquois territories further south, conducting military campaigns that included constructing forts, engaging in skirmishes, and establishing a stronger French presence in contested areas. Their arrival marked a major turning point in New France’s security, as the colony had previously relied on small militias and Indigenous alliances for protection.

Beyond immediate military objectives, the regiment’s presence also had lasting impacts on settlement and colonization. Many soldiers chose to remain in the colony after their service, often receiving land grants (seigneuries) that helped expand agriculture and stabilize frontier communities. The deployment of the Carignan-Salières Regiment illustrates how New France combined military action, diplomacy, and settlement policy to consolidate its hold on North American territories and protect its inhabitants from external threats.
