1941 - December 8 - (the day after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor) United States declares war on Japan (WW2)

1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Emile S. 'Bidu' Plasse, 77, of Maria Avenue, formerly of Webster, a World War II veteran, died Saturday, Aug. 10, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 35 years, Madeleine D. (Choiniere-Korch) Plasse; two sons, Leonard Korch of Northbridge, Christopher Plasse of Webster; four daughters, Sharon Troy of Dudley, Debra Korch of Sturbridge, Sandra Plasse and Lisa Kontoes, both of Webster; five grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Joseph H. and Joseph Hector Plasse; and six sisters, Mary Rose Plasse, Cecile Pfeiffer, Venita Plasse, Annette Miller, Louise Siwek and Jeannette Lusignan, all predeceased him. He was born in Webster, son of Oliver and Amanda (Ethier) Plasse, and moved here in 1991. He graduated from Bartlett High School, Webster, and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Webster - Madeleine D. (Choiniere) (Korch) Plasse, 80, died peacefully Thursday, January 17, 2013 in the Webster Manor. Her husband of 35 years, Emile Plasse died in 2002. Her first husband Leonard Korch Sr. died in 1962.

She leaves two sons: Leonard Korch Jr. and his wife Deborah of Northbridge, Christopher Plasse and his wife Barbara of Woodstock, CT. Four daughters: Sharon Troy of Dudley, Debra Korch and her husband Keith of Sturbridge, Sandra Plasse of Dudley and Lisa Kontoes and her husband Greg of Webster; seven grandchildren: Ashley (Korch) Zimmel, Michael Korch, Leonard and Bryan Korch, Sophia and Samuel Kontoes and Payton Plasse; five step-grandchildren: Brittany and Nicholas Abraham, Gwendolyn Weissinger, and Ashley and Taylor Zakrzewski. She leaves several nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by her brother, Jean-Paul Choiniere, and her sister, Lucille Choiniere.
