Paul Vachon

Paul Vachon, was born circa 1630, the union of Vincent Vachon and The Sapienne Vateau de La Copechagnière, in Poitou. It is the current department of Vendée, district of La-Roche-sur-Yon, Canton de St-Fulgent, Luçon diocese.

Towards 1650, aged about 20 years, he came to Canada. He married in Quebec City, October 22 1653, Marguerite Langlois, a native girl of Beauport, baptized at Quebec. Aged only 14, she was the daughter of Noël Langlois and Françoise Grenier of the Quebec region.

In 1655, he received the Lord Robert Giffard, Lord of Beauport, a concession of land in the village of Fargy, Lord of Beauport. In 1664, the concession was doubled. He had to hire a servant to look after them and continue to wander in many occupations.

He had many talents... To him and Mathurin Roy confided that the chapel and the sick room of the Hotel-Dieu de Quebec. In addition to its primary assignment or seigniorial notary, he was also different functions: tax attorney seigneuries Lirec and Île d'Orléans and the stronghold of Argentenay Secretary Charles Lauzon, Clerk of the lords of Beauport and Notre-Dame-des-Anges. Additionally in 1667, Bishop Laval appointed attorney and notary tax in his lordship of Beaupré and Île d'Orléans. In 1693, during his retirement, he still fulfills these functions.

The family of Paul Vachon consisted of 12 children, 5 boys and 7 girls. Note that the eldest of the family was among the first native priests of Canada. Several of his descendants are found in the Beauce region. We find some who took the nickname Pomerleau. They are descendants of Noel, the third son. Still others, those in the line of Vincent, sign the name of Laminée.

Finally, Paul Vachon and three other members of his family died during the epidemic of small-pox raging in Quebec between the years 1700 to 1703. It seems that this disease took a quarter of the population of Quebec.
