Leo Varasconi of New Britain

Leo Varasconi of New Britain died Thursday at New Britain General Hospital. He was 76.

He was born in Cortona, Italy, and immigrated to New Britain when he was 2 years old. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and graduated from the University of Hartford with a degree in business administration. In 1950, he joined Putnam & Co. in New Britain, which later became Advest Inc., where he had been a broker for almost 52 years, serving as vice president.


He was a charter member of the New Britain Evening Lions and a past president and charter member of Unico International as well as the New Britain Chapter of Unico. In 1995, he was named man of the year by the New Britain chapter. He taught investment courses and served on the alumni board of the University of Hartford. He was a member of the New Britain Economic Development Commission and the Wethersfield Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen Pitts Varasconi; two daughters, LeeAnn Varasconi of Simsbury and Mary B. Nichols of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, John S. Whitecage Jr. of St. Petersburg; a sister, Rose Rivizza of West Hartford; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, New Britain. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. Calling hours are Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. at New Britain Memorial/ Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain.
