Brownville was first settled in 1795 and for a time it was known as Number 5 R8 Plantation. Residents paid state taxes as a plantation from 1821 to 1823. They were incorporated as a town in 1824. familysearch.org
The town includes the villages of Brownville, Knight's Landing and Brownville Junction, near which passes the 100-Mile Wilderness of the Appalachian Trail.

Brownville, Maine
Piscataquis county. Bounded on the N. and E. by Pleasant river, S. by Williamsburgh and W. by Vaughan. Incorporated, 1824. Population, 1837, 532. It lies about 20 miles N. from Dover, 97 N.N.E. from Augusta, and 171 N.N.E. from Portland. This is a good township of land, and produced, in 1837, 3,252 bushels of wheat.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory.
