Saint-Jacques, Québec

Saint-Jacques is located in the regional county municipality of Montcalm, which in turn is part of the administrative region of Lanaudière.

After 1755, many Acadians settled in the territory and several names of communication routes bear witness to this, such as Rue Bro, Rue Brien, Rue Landry, Rue Forest, etc.

Over the years, the territory has been known by various names: Saint-Jacques-de-la-Nouvelle-Acadie (1770), because of the Acadians who settled there at that time, Saint-Jacques-de-l' Achigan (1832-1917), L'Achigan, Nouvelle-Acadie, Terres-Promises, perhaps because of the new destiny that awaited the Acadians there; Saint-Jacques-de-Montcalm, according to the census division.

The place owes its name to Father Jacques Degeay (1717-1774), former parish priest of L'Assomption (1742-1774) who took an interest in the fate of the Acadians in 1766. The original name underlined the important presence of the Rivière de l'Achigan, which was teeming with this variety of fish.
