About Lincoln
Lincoln is a town in Addison County, Vermont.
Lincoln was chartered to Colonel Benjamin Simonds and 64 associates on November 9, 1780. Simonds, as commander of the Massachusetts militia, fought at the Battle of Bennington in 1777. He named the new town in honor of his commanding officer, Major General Benjamin Lincoln (1733–1810), who had played a vital role in getting the militia to Vermont.
Lincoln, like Ferrisburgh and several other Addison County towns, was settled by members of the Society of Friends, or Quakers. The first Quakers settled in an area known as Mud Flat about 1795.

South Lincoln is a census-designated place within the town of Lincoln.

Addison county. Lincoln was first settled by a number of "Friends," in 1790. The town is on high ground with an uneven surface. It lies 21 miles S.W. from Montpelier and 15 N.E. from Middlebury. Population, 1830, 639.

Addison County. Lincoln is considerably uneven. The western part is watered by New Haven River, which is formed here ; and several small branches of Mad River rise in the eastern part. The timber is principally hard wood, with some tracts of spruce.
Boundaries. North by Starksboro and Fayston, east by Warren, south by Avery's Gore, and west by Bristol.
First Settlers. The settlement of this township was commenced about the year 1790. The first settlers were mostly of the denomination called Friends, or Quakers, There is at present a society of this order, who have a house for public worship.
Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 860 bushels; Indian corn, 1,080 bushels; potatoes, 20,400 bushels ; hay, 650 tons ; maple sugar, 29,510 pounds ; wool, 9,000 pounds.
Distances. Twenty-one miles southwest from Montpelier, and fifteen northeast from Middlebury.
