The parish of Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel is located on the right bank of the St. Lawrence River, at the mouth of the Richelieu River, 65 kilometers northeast of Montreal. Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel is part of the regional county municipality of Pierre-de-Saurel.
This region, inhabited for millennia by Amerindians, notably the Iroquois, was explored by Samuel de Champlain in 1609 and 1610. Fort Richelieu, built by the French in 1642, is supposed to be the first construction in the town of Sorel. This fort was abandoned by the French and destroyed by the Iroquois in 1647.
In 1665, Captain Pierre de Saurel was put in charge of rebuilding the fort. Later, his family settled there and in 1675, the parish of Saint-Pierre-de-Sorel was founded. However, it was not canonically constituted until 1721.
Towards the end of the War of Independence in the United States, many Loyalists took refuge in Quebec and several of them settled in Sorel. Later, soldiers from the 60th and 44th regiments of the British army and the Hesse Hanau and Anhalt Zerbst regiments, made up largely of Germans, were sent to Sorel to protect the region against a possible American invasion. They are commanded by General Friedrich Adolphus von Riedesel.
Saint-Anne-de-Sorel is known above all as the country of the Survenant. Thousands of tourists take the Chenal-du-Moine path to discover the land where this character, from Germaine Guèvremont's novel, lived.
