Saint-Vincent-de-Paul is also well known for its fortress-like federal penitentiary, built in 1873.

1733 - Saint-Vincent-de-Paul founded
Parish beginnings
The historic parish of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul was founded in 1743, although the foundation was authorized in 1740 at the same time as that of Sainte-Rose-de-Lima. Saint-Vincent-de-Paul therefore separated from Saint-François-de-Sales in 1743. It was then, at the confluence of the La Pinière stream and the Rivière des Prairies, in the eastern sector, that a hamlet developed. where the first merchants settled, from 1745 to 1780.
A wealthy merchant, Joseph-Hubert Lacroix settled there in 1767 and had a stone residence built. In 1789, Lacroix, who acquired the neighboring land, came to own a vast estate, which put an end to the expansion of the hamlet.
1832 - The parish of St. Vincent de Paul (Isle Jesus)
is in the S. part of the island, and the farms are conceded, some of them prior to 1759; the rates on which they are held are, 1st. 2 sols for each superficial arpent, and 1 sol as quit rent for each front arpent. - 2nd. 2 sols tournois for each superficial arpent, and 1 sol as quit rent for each front arpent. - 3rd. 1 sol tournois for each superficial arpent, half a bushel of whet for every 20 superficial arpents, and 1 sol as quit rent for each front arpent.

1841 - Église de Saint-Vincent-de-Paul established at Saint-Vincent-de-Paul

ISLE-JESUS, a seignory of Lower Canada, in the co. of Terrebonne, separated from the mainland by the river St. Jean or Jesus, and from the island of Montreal on the NW by the Riviere-des-Prairies. It is 21 m. in length, and 6 m. at its greatest breadth, and is in its entire extent level, fertile and well-cultivated. It possesses excellent roads, and is connected by several ferries with the mainland and adjacent island. It contains 3 parishes. The houses are mostly built of stone.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL, a thriving post village of Quebec, co. of Laval, on Isle Jesus, and on la Riviere des Prairies, 12 miles from Montreal. It contains the Provincial Penitentiary, 2 telegraph offices, and several stores and hotels. Pop. 1,000.
From 1878, the commissioning of the first railway line, which became the Canadian Pacific in 1885.

Saint Vin'cent de Paul, a post-village of Quebec, co. of Laval, on Isle Jésus, and on the Rivière des Prairies, 12 miles N.N.W. of Montreal. It contains the provincial penitentiary, several stores, and hotels. Pop. 1000.

Saint Vincent de Paul, a post-village of Laval co., Quebec, ont Isle Jesus, the Riviere des Prairies, and the Canadian Pacific R., 12 miles NNW. of Montreal. It has cheese and butter-factories and various mills. Pop. in 1901, 1462.
In 1908, a tram terminus was built at Sault-au-Récollet to meet the traffic of the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul crossing.
