1800s Cooking Tips and Recipes
California Cake One pint of flour, one pint of Indian meal, one pint of milk, two eggs, one teaspoonful of soda, two spoonfuls of cream of tartar, four tablespoonfuls of sugar, small piece of butter. Mix the eggs and milk together, add sugar and butter, well beaten, then flour and Indian meal, a little at a time, alternately; mix the cream of tartar in the flour, and the soda in a little of the milk. Bake in pans, and serve hot for breakfast or tea.
