In New France, the vast majority of newcomers were either soldiers or indentured workers. Before crossing the Atlantic, the indentured workers had signed a contract providing for a predetermined stay. Most of them saw it as a temporary contract, not a permanent move. The fact that more than half of them nevertheless stayed on shows that New France had a real power of attraction.
