On February 5, 1663, a great earthquake was felt throughout Northeastern North America. No deaths were recorded, but some people got the scare of their lives. For the clergy in New France, the cause was obvious. The earthquake was a sign of devine anger. For a time, this put a stop to the liquor trade between the settlers and the Native people.
