BERTHIER, a county of Lower Canada, in the district of Montreal; bounded on the NE by the co. of St. Maurice; on the E and SE by the St Lawrence; on the SW by the co. of Lachenaie; and on the NW by the northern boundary of the prov. It is 240 m. in length, and 24 m. broad. Area 5,760 sq. m. Pop. in 1836, 17,695. The surface for a distance of 15 m. from the St. Lawrence is generally level. It is watered by the Bayonne, Chicot, Great and Little Chaloupe, St. Charles, St. Joseph, St. John, and Brook rivers. - The village of Berthier is situated on the Chenail du Nord, on the main road to Quebec, midway between Montreal and Three rivers. Pop. 850.
