World War I


World War I, also known as the Great War, was a global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918. It involved many of the world's major powers, primarily divided into two opposing alliances: the Allies, including countries like the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and later the United States; and the Central Powers, including Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire.

The war was triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in June 1914. Tensions and alliances among European powers quickly escalated into a widespread conflict. The war was characterized by trench warfare, new technological weapons, and significant loss of life on both sides.

Over time, the war expanded beyond Europe to include theaters in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The conflict ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which imposed heavy reparations and territorial changes on Germany. The war had profound and far-reaching consequences, including the redrawing of national borders, the collapse of empires, and the emergence of new nations. The harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles contributed to the instability that eventually led to World War II.
