1918 - 19 Year Old Boy Drowned

1918 - 19 Year Old Boy Drowned

Nineteen-year-old John Hatin of Burington sank to his death in the Winooski river Sunday afternoon, a half mile below the railroad bridge. His body was recovered shortly afterwards by Edwin Warl of the Winooski road.

Although the drowned youth left his home at a quarter after three o'clock to fish in the river, it is quite evident that he was disporting himself in the water when he was overcome. Evidence to this effect is found in the fact that his body was found on the Winooski side of the river while his clothes reposed on the Burlington side. Whether he could swim or not is unknown, but the probabilities are that he had mastered this art, otherwise, he would not have been found where he was.

The drowned boy is a son of [illegible] T. Hatin, a laborer who resides on Archibald street. Chief of Police [illegible] Russell notified the father of his son's drowning immediately after word spread to police headquarters. The police patrol with two police officers was sent to the scene to render any assistance possible.
