A well known area rancher and member of one of Wickenburg's oldest and largest families, William "Jr." Hershkowitz, 62, died of a heart attack in Wenden last Saturday.

Born March 19, 1924, Hershkowitz was a second generation Arizonan, born and raised in Congress.

His grandfather settled in Congress at the turn of the century after migrating to the United States from Eastern Europe and opened a general store in the thriving mining community.

The family interests were expanded into ranching by Hershkowitz's father, William Sr. and carried on by his sons, Jr. and George.
Hershkowitz also worked at the Congress Gold Mine and during World War II served in the U.S. army.

In 1950 he and his family relocated in Wickenburg where in 1954 he met and Married Dolores Temerowski, who was visiting from Detroit, Mich.

Through the years Hershkowitz became well known for his civic contributions including work and services he performed with his heavy equipment for Wickenburg and it surrounding communities on such project as Desert Caballeros Western Museum, Coffinger Field, Wickenburg High School and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

A cattle rancher, Hershkowitz and his brother for many years have prepared and hosted deep-pit barbecues for the community at Easter and have donated those services on m any other occasions for families in time of need and for various town benefits and civic activities.

He was a charter member of the Wickenburg Elks Lodge BPOE 2160 and for more than 20 years, a welcome guest on the Desert Caballeros Trail Ride.
Hershkowitz was made honory firemen for his many years service as a Wickenburg Volunteer Fireman and continued support to the department.

He was an avid sportsman and organized large hunting parties for friends and family in Central and Northern Arizona.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Hershkowitz, of Wickenburg, three sons, Willie, Frank and Larry, all of Wickenburg; two daughter, Susan of New York, N.Y. and Nancy Figy, of Phoenix.

He is also survived by his mother, Sarah Hershkowitz, of Wickenburg; three brother, George and Richard Hershkowitz, of Wickenburg; and Mark Dowdy, all of Wickenburg; two sisters, Joyce Fields, of Wickenburg and Shirley Wachter, of Flagstaff and five grandchildren. Survivors also includes three aunts, Belle Deck, of Congress, Nora Jackson and Hazel Baker, of California and two uncles, Allen Hershkowitz, of Wickenburg and Carlos Monte, of California.

Visitation was Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Wickenburg Funeral Home Chapel with the rosary at 7 p.m.

The funeral mass will be at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Father Thomas E. Boyle officiating.

The family request s memorial contributions may be made to W.O. Boswell Memorial Hospital Cardiac Center in lieu of flowers.
